Brenda Hartill is a British painter, collage artist and printmaker whose work explores the texture, pattern and shifting light of the landscape through both finely detailed figurative pieces and bold abstract forms. Inspired by the dramatic light of Southern Europe and New Zealand, where she was raised, as well as the softer tones of London and Sussex, her practice spans painting, collage and printmaking.
Now based in South London after two decades in the countryside near Rye, Brenda continues to create mixed-media collages and paintings from her studio beside the railway at Cator Cottage. Though no longer able to use her much-loved Rochat press, her work remains deeply rooted in observation, memory and place, with collections ranging from her celebrated Londoners’ London series to layered organic abstractions and etchings inspired by Spain and New Zealand.
