It is well lit and centrally heated in winter, and is next door to Brenda Hartill’s private studio, which will be in use during the courses. There is a beautiful two acre garden with stunning views, which students are welcome to use for drawing and inspiration, and a heated swimming pool in the summer. Brenda Hartill’s gallery is in the Tudor Oast House, and this will be used for an exhibition at the end of the residential courses.
SEMI-RESIDENTIAL COURSES, Spring 2009
7 DAY INTENSIVE COURSES
Sat 18 April - Sat 25 April 2009 - Mixed-media
Collagraph, etching, lino etching, wood cut, and how to combine these methods
Sat 2 May - Sat 9 May 2009 - Collagraph
compiling a collagraph plate, along with special inking techniques
We would hope that these courses will be informative and fun to do, and that students will enjoy a lovely country experience in this beautiful part of England as well as learn a great deal. Some basic printmaking experience would be desirable.
The mixed-media course covers the basics of a wide range of media. There will be demonstrations by either Brenda Dawn or Nicola covering a range of techniques including etching (using nitric acid and zinc), collagraph, carborundum, lino etching, (Dawn’s speciality) wood cut (Nicola’s speciality) Students can experiment with all media, or concentrate on one or the other.
The collagraph course will include preparation of base plates, building up texture using various fillers, glues, texture mediums and carborundum. The preparation of natural and miscellaneous textural materials for printing will be demonstrated, along with various methods of sealing plates ready for printing. Tutor Brenda Hartill, with either Dawn Cole or Nicola Jackson as technicians.
The printing for both courses: We will be demonstrating various methods of printing, using intaglio, roll-ups, and “the rubs”, chine colle, and silver and gold leaf application.
Individual help will be provided by Brenda Hartill and/or one of her two printers, and critiques and discussions will take place regularly during the week. Numbers will be limited, so an early booking is recommended.
COURSE ARRANGEMENTS
Students coming by car should aim to arrive at their accommodation in Rye on the Saturday between 2pm & 3pm, and should make their way to Pound House by 4.30 in time for the orientation talk and discussion of health and safety in the studio. Students arriving by train will be met at the station, and taken to the accommodation. Around 4pm they will be collected and taken by car to Pound House. Then there will then be time to settle into their own work areas, and organise materials, etc. before drinks and the Dinner/BBQ (hopefully in the garden) of Pound House, with a chance to meet other students. In the evening arrangements will be made to return students to Rye.
Each day we will have a talk, introducing a new aspect of creating plates, and special methods of printing. Towards the end of the week, we will offer critiques, both individual and group.
Lunch will be provided in Pound House every day included in the course fee, along with tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits as needed during the day. We will provide dinner, including wine, on 2 nights: Saturday welcome dinner, and a Friday last night party. On Friday afternoon we will hang an exhibition of the week’s work in the Oasthouse Gallery, and we will hold a final critique and discussion before the farewell dinner.
Recreation
If you need a break from the studio, we have 2 acres of beautiful gardens, with fabulous views. The main self-catering accommodation is in the pretty medieval town of Rye (10 mins drive), full of tea shops, book and quirky junk shops, and a variety of pubs and restaurants – a car would be useful, but walking and cycling in the area is superb, and splendid country walks are available on the doorstep. Winchelsea Beach and Camber Sands are a short drive away, for a quick dip in the sea. Winchelsea is another fine small town (12 mins by car), and Hastings is a half hour drive.
Non-participating partners are welcome, and there are excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a possible golf partner (my husband Harold Moores, plantsman, historian and Music Man). Many interesting historic houses and gardens are a short drive away (Great Dixter, Sissinghurst, Bodiam Castle, Battle Abbey, Pashley Manor etc)
PRICE
Course fee not including accommodation, but including lunch every day, dinner 2 nights & material £465pp

We have decided not to offer accommodation in Pound House this time, as we are not able to offer a self catering arrangement, which seems to be the preferred option of most students trying to keep the costs down. We have therefore rented a large house in nearby Rye so we can offer self catering accommodation, with the option of many nearby amenaties.
B&B accommodation in central Rye in a self-catering period house, which is full of character and charm:
Single occupancy in a double or twin room £350 pp
Non participating partner sharing double room £ 75pp
Shared occupancy in twin bedded room £200pp
We will collect and drop off every morning & evening. ( Rye is 10 mins drive from Udimore).
Parking is available 5 mins walk for £1 a day
We will provide the makings for a light breakfast in the house with coffee and tea provided for the week.
Self catering is possible for evening meals, in a well appointed kitchen and you will be within walking distance of many cafes, pubs, restaurants, and take-aways. There is an excellent Deli 3 doors away, and a supermarket 5 minutes walk
