The workshop studio is in the grounds of Pound House, an ancient timbered house near Rye in Sussex. It is well lit and centrally heated in winter, and is next door to Brenda Hartill’s private studio, which will be in use during the courses. There is a beautiful two acre garden with stunning views, which students are welcome to use for drawing and inspiration, and a heated swimming pool in the summer. Brenda Hartill’s gallery is in the Tudor Oast House, and this will be used for an exhibition at the end of the residential courses.

RESIDENTIAL COURSE – etching & collagraph

8 DAY INTENSIVE COURSE

Saturday 4 October – Sunday 12 October

We would hope that this course will be informative and fun to do, and that students will enjoy a lovely country experience in this beautiful part of England as well as learn a great deal.  Some basic printmaking experience would be desirable.

Students will arrive on the Saturday around 2pm, in time for the orientation talk at 3pm, There will then be time to settle into their own work areas, accommodation and organise materials, get ideas etc

Dinner/BBQ (hopefully in the garden) of Pound House, with a chance to meet other students.

Each day will start with a talk, introducing a new aspect of creating plates, and special methods of printing. Both media will be covered, but students can work with one or both disciplines, and can miss talks if they wish to concentrate on another medium.

For collagraph this will include preparation of base plates, building up texture using various fillers, glues, texture mediums, carborundum natural materials, and their preparation for printing, and sealing the plates ready for printing.

For etching we will cover preparation of plates, hard ground, soft ground, deep bite, sugar lift etc.  We will be using copper and zinc plates, (which will not be included in the course price.  Bring your own or buy from a small selection)

The Printing We will be demonstrating various methods of printing, using intaglio, roll-ups, and “the rubs” Chine colle, and silver and gold leaf application will be explained to those who are  interested.

Individual help will be provided by Brenda Hartill and/or one of her two printers, and critiques and discussions will take place regularly during the week

Lunch will be provided every day included in the course fee, along with tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits as needed during the day.  We will provide dinner, including wine, on 3 nights: Saturday welcome dinner, a mid week dinner, and a Saturday last night BBQ party.  On Saturday afternoon students will hang an exhibition of the week’s work in the Oasthouse Gallery, and we will hold a final critique and discussion after breakfast on Sunday morning.  Then after a farewell Sunday lunch pack up and return home.

If you need a break from the studio, we have 2 acres of beautiful gardens, with fabulous views, & an outdoor heated swimming pool. We will also be making trips from time to time into the pretty medieval town of Rye (10 mins drive), full of tea shops, book and quirky junk shops, and a variety of pubs and restaurants – a car would be useful, but walking and cycling in the area is superb, and splendid country walks are available on the doorstep. Winchelsea Beach and Camber Sands are a short drive away, for a quick dip in the sea.  Winchelsea is another fine small town (12 mins by car), and Hastings is a half hour drive. Non-participating partners are welcome, and there are excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a possible golf partner (Harold Moores, gardener, historian and Music man). Many interesting historic houses and gardens are a short drive away (Great Dixter, Sissinghurst, Bodium Castle, Battle Abbey, Pashley Manor  etc)

Students can relax in the evening and enjoy superb surround sound music, CDs LPs and  DVD, with a vast selection of music and films, as well as books and magazines in the Oast House gallery/lounge. There is also a separate snug if you simply want to read, chat, or watch Sky TV.  The studio will also be open in the evenings, (no tuition).

Local non-residential students are welcome.  Lunch is included in the course fee, but we would recommend you staying for dinner when it is served(a price adjustmant can be made if this is not possible). If you have a spare room, and would be willing to offer a bed to another student, the course fee could be reduced accordingly. Non-participating partners welcome.

Accommodation in Pound House

We have a double, twin, or single room in Pound House.  All share the same guest bathroom.

Further accommodation

We have negotiated extra accommodation 2 minutes walk from Pound House, in Farleys, a pretty 18th century thatched cottage, belonging to our architect/teacher neighbours.  It is their home so wardrobe and cupboard space is limited.  This is self-catering accommodation, with a kitchen/dining room with Reyburn stove, gas hob, and microwave. This kitchen can seat 8 and will be available to all students if they wish to self-cater in the evenings when dinner is not available in Pound House. There is a comfortable living room with freeview TV & DVD player and study with wi-fi for your laptop.  The views and garden are lovely, and the house is close enough to slip back for a break when the printmaking gets too much. Guests are asked not to smoke in the house, as this is required by the owner’s insurance company.

There is a double en-suite bedroom, with single futon (so could be shared by 2 single people), a twin bedded room, and a double room.  There is a family bathroom with bath, toilet, bidet and shower.  Students could walk to Pound House for breakfast, or take back food for breakfast in the evening.  We provide 3 evening meals, but all students could self-cater on the other nights at Farleys if they wish.  The house is 2 minutes walk from the pub, which provides evening meals.
